Portland Public Schools Historic Building Assessment

Client: Portland Public Schools

Location: Portland, OR

Summary: ENTRIX was retained by Portland Public Schools (PPS) to conduct a historic building assessment of all properties currently owned by the Portland School District. Under the supervision of the District’s Office of School Modernization, ENTRIX conducted archival and secondary source research; a field study of the district-owned buildings constructed prior to 1979; and a comparative assessment of those buildings to identify their character-defining features, assess their comparative levels of historical integrity, and evaluate their eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).

For this Project, ENTRIX recorded all buildings located on 98 PPS properties. Descriptions and significance statements for each property were prepared using the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office’s Intensive Level Survey form. In determining which properties were NRHP eligible, ENTRIX developed evaluation criteria that weighed each property’s historical integrity and its historical significance. ENTRIX also produced scaled floor plans in CAD that identified key architectural features for thirty of the elementary schools and for all ten of the high schools.
