| About S.M.A.R.T. |
| ENTRIX developed S.M.A.R.T. (Sustainability Management
Assessment Review Tool) based on the Global Reporting Initiative,
which provides a framework for sustainability that is centered around economic,
environmental, and social impacts and provides indicators for sustainability.
This tool allows our sustainability experts to quantify the economical, social,
and ecological values provided by our sustainability services.
| What are Sustainability Impacts?
Sustainability Impacts are the effects of projects and developments on natural
and built environments, communities, local and national economies, as well as the
financial well-being of the client. Quantifying sustainability impacts encompasses
short and long-term views, as well as looking to direct and secondary impacts on
communities, ecosystems, and local or regional economies.
Example: Sustainability Impacts of a Wind Power Project
A wind farm can impact communities by creating green jobs and revitalizing the local economy through the hiring of local contractors.
The environment is benefited by the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) and other emissions. Clients may reap benefits from enhanced relationships
with regulators, stakeholders, communities, as well as revenue from the wind farm.

Win-Win-Win
ENTRIX is uniquely positioned to assist clients in determining the measurable
impacts that their projects might have on the environment, society, and economy. Our world-class scientists,
adaptive engineers, and resource economists help define and assign values in each of these three critical areas.
S.M.A.R.T. was created to efficiently demonstrate those impacts and quickly convey the information to private and public sector clients. |
The "win-win-win" to our Sustainability Solutions:
- Environment
- Communities
- Economic health of the economy and clients

The S.M.A.R.T. Process
When S.M.A.R.T. is applied to a project and the environmental, social, and/or economic impacts are measured,
our clients are provided a useful demonstration of the value that each of these factors provides.
The S.M.A.R.T. process involves:
- ENTRIX professionals meet with clients to determine their goals
- Our professionals identify the indicators related to those goals,
drawing from the Global Reporting
Indicators and/or the project or client's relevant sustainability indicator framework
- Where appropriate for a project, ENTRIX scientists, engineers and economists perform defensible assessments
and provide measurements for impacts on the environment, society, and the economy (S.M.A.R.T. report)
- A S.M.A.R.T. report, including financial impacts, is provided to the client, who may use it in a number of ways; as a means to
communicate the value of a project to stakeholders, including agency personnel, community members, and to raise funding for future projects.
Illustrative Example
Brownfields today present as many opportunities as challenges. In addition to meeting agency criteria,
clients faced with a Brownfield may also have goals such as cost control, creation of green jobs for the local community, passive recreational use,
threatened or endangered species protection, and carbon sequestration.
